New visa requirements for South africans entering ireland
Ireland will impose new visa requirements on South African travelers. From the 10th of July 2024 South African citizens will need a visa to enter Ireland. The Minister for Justice confirmed this change will bring Ireland more in line with other EU countries.
The Irish government is also responding to the surge in international protection applicants from South Africa. This has prompted a review of immigration policies, with the aim of enhancing control and ensuring proper asylum processes.
South African citizens previously enjoyed visa-free travel to Ireland for up to 90 days. This policy shift reflects Ireland’s efforts to manage the flow of international protection applicants more effectively.
Necessary documents for south african visa
It’s crucial to check the latest visa requirements and ensure all necessary documents are in order, when visiting ireland. This includes having a valid passport, proof of funds, and a completed visa application form. Visa applications are submitted in one of the many VFS Centres around South Africa. There are for example, VFS offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
When applying for an employment permit, you will then need to make a visa application once your permit has been granted. This will add an additional 8 weeks to the process (approximately).

Employment Permits Ireland will be able to guide you through the visa process following a successful employment permit application.
The situation is likely to change in the coming months as Ireland has committed to introducing a single employment permit system. This will allow applicants to apply for an employment permit and visa at the same time. There is no timeline for the implementation of this new system.
